A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
